2 Comic Books  art in the form of sequential panels that represent individual scenes that have brief descriptive prose and written narrative. Usually include word balloons.  Orginated in 1933 in The United States  Reprinting of newspaper comic strips in book format  1938’s Superman turned comic books into a major industry  Different types: graphic novel, manga, etc.

5 The Graphic Novel  Subcategory of comic books  Definition: fictional story that is presented in comic strip form and presented as a book.  Sometimes used to create a distinction between works created as stand alone stories, in contrast to collections or compilations of a story arc from a comic book series published in book form.  First term of “graphic novel” appeared in print in 1976

7 Differences between Comic Books & Graphic Novels  Story completeness (gn covers one story in its entirety)  Length. Comics run between 21 and 24 pages, graphic novels run between 60-120 pages.  Availability. GN are available at traditional bookstores/libraries.  Maturity.
