When we are looking at numbers, there are two columns. On the right is the ONES column and on the left is the TENS column. When we add these two numbers together, we get another number. Since the six in sixteen is in the ones place, we will write it in the ones column. The one is in the tens so we will regroup the one and carry it over to the tens column. We are now able to add the number s in the tens column on the left. One plus three plus two equals six. This is more than nine. The rule states that you cannot have more than nine ones in the ones place. In order to fix this, we must circle ten ones. I like to call this the MAGIC TEN! When you have circled ten ones, these ten ones can form a ten to be regrouped.
