1 William Golding (author of Lord of the Flies) How did his past effect his writing?

2 Education William Golding was born in Cornwall, England in 1911 and educated at the Marlborough Grammar School and at Bransenose College in Oxford, England.

3 Marlborough Grammar School FFounded in 1843 as a school for the Sons of Clergy of the Church of England IIts elegant buildings lie amidst fine lawns and gardens, with large playing fields adjoining them. IIt pioneered the admission of girls in 1968, and became fully co-educational in 1989. AAt the school, there is a good deal of emphasis on religion. TTremendously strong involvement in music (over 400 students learn an instrument).

4 Military Service William Golding joined the Royal Navy in 1940 and spent the better part of six years on the water and in battle. The Royal Navy played a key part in establishing British Imperialism all over the world throughout the 19 th and 20 th Centuries.

5 Military Service (cont.) The German Battleship Bismarck is one of the most famous warships of the Second World War in which it was sunk by the Royal Navy. William Golding was there. In all, almost 2,100 German soldiers lost their lives.

6 Military Service (cont.) He was present off the French coast for the D-Day (June 6, 1944) invasion of Omaha Beach and the Battle of Normandy.

7 Post-Military After the war, he returned to teaching and began to write again… Lord of the Flies was first published in 1954. It was Golding’s first novel.

8 Accomplishments & Accolades  William Golding went on to publish 15 additional books, including novels, essays and plays.  In 1980, he won the Booker Prize.  He died in 1993
