4 Key Characteristics of the Renaissance  Humanism - interest in the human being’s place on this earth – Change FROM religious devotion of the Middle Ages  Printing Press - books more available  More writers began using the vernacular

5 Renaissance Man  Leonardo Da Vinci – a painter, sculptor, architect, and scientist  Renaissance man —a person of broad education and interests whose curiosity knew no bounds. “Jack of all trades”

6 The Age of Exploration  Thirst for knowledge = great burst of exploration.  Crusades opened routes to Asia

8 The Protestant Reformation: Questioning the Catholic Church  Questioned authority of the church.  Complaints: – Taking money from people (indulgences & taxes) – People could not interpret Bible for themselves
