© NERC All rights reserved The National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) - NERC's designated data centre for Earth Sciences The Data Centre manages a large collection of geoscience information - earth science datasets, physical collections, paper records, digital data and archives BGS Marine Data webpages - www.bgs.ac.uk/services/ngdc/management/marine/home.html www.bgs.ac.uk/services/ngdc/management/marine/home.html MEDIN DAC webpage - www.bgs.ac.uk/services/ngdc/management/marine/MEDINDataArchiveCentre.html www.bgs.ac.uk/services/ngdc/management/marine/MEDINDataArchiveCentre.html Within the NGDC, BGS manage the UK National Marine Geoscience Data holdings, primarily covering the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) Area

© NERC All rights reserved DAC for Geology, Geophysics & Backscatter Marine geological and geophysical data mainly from the UKCS + backscatter component from bathymetric data Ingestion, long-term archiving and delivery - data stored for long-term future reuse and distributed by the DAC Various types of marine geoscientific data are held by BGS, including both data acquired during marine surveys, and derivative data resulting from the processing and interpretation of survey data Not included multibeam > UKHO photo/video > DASSH renewables > The Crown Estate Marine Data Exchange - to be forwarded to DAC in future oil and gas (exploration) > DECC/UK OIL & GAS (CDA) Not included multibeam > UKHO photo/video > DASSH renewables > The Crown Estate Marine Data Exchange - to be forwarded to DAC in future oil and gas (exploration) > DECC/UK OIL & GAS (CDA)

© NERC All rights reserved Seabed sample data Grabs, cores, etc. - geological descriptions and interpretations, geotechnical, geochemical and particle size analysis data BGS also maintains an archive of physical materials (cores and samples), records, maps and documents

© NERC All rights reserved Geophysical data seismic, sidescan sonar, multibeam backscatter Archive of ~20000 legacy paper seismic records ~12000 have been scanned – online later

© NERC All rights reserved How to submit data to the DAC Contact us - medin@bgs.ac.ukmedin@bgs.ac.uk First provide an inventory Depending on volume, type, quality BGS may quote a cost for archiving Generally data should be supplied as distinct datasets (e.g. survey) - Each survey should have a unique survey name/ID Data Submission Guidelines – www.bgs.ac.uk/services/ngdc/management/marine/MEDINDataSubmissionGuidelines.html

© NERC All rights reserved Terms and Conditions Data ownership and any Terms and Conditions should be clearly specified Open Government Licence (OGL) - data can be made available without restriction – encourage re-use of data Open Government Licence If you don’t want your data to be released under these conditions please make this clear Data owner retains copyright and gives BGS permission to hold a copy of their data within the data archive and to distribute Data owner is still required to be acknowledged Provide a statement to accompany data if required Data may be supplied with an embargo date to allow future release

© NERC All rights reserved Discovery Metadata MEDIN discovery metadata for each dataset Who creates the MEDIN discovery record (data provider or DAC) is dependant on the organisation If the data provider has ability to create MEDIN XML they may provide these directly to MEDIN We can create metadata on your behalf if enough metadata is supplied (e.g. in spreadsheet) and forward for inclusion in the MEDIN portal MEDIN portal Series metadata for the overall project/programme which the survey/data set is part of may also be supplied, if appropriate

© NERC All rights reserved Marine Geology and Geophysics Data Guidelines Data archive standards The relevant guidelines should be referred to for your data types – e.g. bathymetry, sidescan sonar, seismic, and sediment characteristics Specify standard data exchange formats And other information to include

© NERC All rights reserved Detailed Metadata/Documentation Spreadsheets of detailed metadata should be provided if possible – see MEDIN guideline Instrumentation, software, processing, methods, formats, etc. Include quality information/assessment of data and any problems Cruise Report should be supplied Any other useful documents such as acquisition/processing/QC reports/logs

© NERC All rights reserved Data Requirements Data should be fully QC’d before submission Both raw and processed data accepted provided clearly specified Don’t include duplicate, draft or spurious files - Ensure that the data is in its final form GIS/shape files of survey polygons, backscatter polygons, geophysical lines, sample points are useful Coordinate Reference System should be clearly specified

© NERC All rights reserved Seabed survey dataset may contain a range of various data types/formats/products Important that data is well organised Recommended that data are incorporated within a documented folder structure E.g. BGS Survey Folder StructureBGS Survey Folder Structure (May be exceptions – e.g. for single data type/standalone dataset) File naming conventions/consistency Summary checklist of data with numbers of each data type – overview of submission Full listing of data files - filenames, size, software package, short description

© NERC All rights reserved Geophysical Data Each geophysical line should have distinct ID (name or number) IDs should match filenames Include navigation Processed geophysical data should be corrected - laybacks applied, etc. GIS shape files of line/fix point location can be provided If any lines are missing, the reason why should be specified Processed backscatter should be provided if possible – UKHO will pass on to us

© NERC All rights reserved Seabed Sample Data Each core/grab should have distinct ID – should match filenames/data Data may be provided in spreadsheet or Access (e.g. Marine Recorder) Clear column heading/units Refer to guidelines – e.g. Sediment and Rock Characteristics GIS shape files of point locations may be provided

© NERC All rights reserved DAC for Geology, Geophysics & Backscatter Data can be incorporated into the BGS database and data management system to BGS standards and made available online – add to the UKCS dataset Or we can accept and archive data as is and provide metadata to MEDIN

© NERC All rights reserved How to access data Offshore GeoIndex - View service www.bgs.ac.uk/GeoIndex/offshore.htm www.bgs.ac.uk/GeoIndex/offshore.htm Web Map Service (WMS) available – use in your own desktop GIS To be extended to data download service Currently access to data is by email request (offshoredata@bgs.ac.uk)offshoredata@bgs.ac.uk In future - more marine data online

© NERC All rights reserved Data Products / Outputs Delivery National Seabed mapping – MAREMAP Partnership aims to improve seafloor and shallow geological mapping to achieve national objectives http://www.maremap.ac.uk
