Acids and Bases  Every liquid you see has either acidic or basic traits  Scientists use something called a pH scale to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is  The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14

Acids and Bases  Litmus paper is used to tell us if a liquid is an acid or base  Both acids and bases are potentially harmful  They eat away at other substances, especially the stronger they are  Acids and bases react with each other

More about Acids  How can I tell what liquids are acidic? An acid is substance that has a pH less than 7  (0-6.9 on the pH scale) Acids are sour React with metals  Testing for an Acid:  Turns blue litmus paper red  Red litmus paper stays red

More about Bases  How can I tell what liquids are basic? A base is substance that has a pH greater than 7  (7.1-14 on the pH scale) Bases taste bitter Feel slippery on the skin  Testing for a Base:  Turns red litmus paper blue  Blue litmus paper stays blue

Acids and Bases  What about Neutral liquids?  Most liquids we find everyday have a pH near 7  Testing with litmus paper:  Blue paper stays blue  Red paper stays red
