1 Objectives Understand and identify the varying forms of conflict in a narrative. Identify and analyze thematic elements in a narrative text. Identify, understand, and illustrate exceptional qualities of narrative writing.

2 Literary Conflict

3 Conflict In a story, conflict is the struggle between opposing forces. In a story, conflict is the struggle between opposing forces.

4 Protagonist The main character The main character

6 External External Conflict takes place outside of the body

7 External There are multiple types of external conflict

8 Person vs. Person The struggle is between two or more characters in the story.

9 External Person vs. Nature This type of conflict pits a story's main character or characters against a natural force such as a flood, predatory animal, or disease epidemic.

10 External Person vs. Society In many stories, the protagonist battles against element of government or culture.

11 External Others include: Person vs. Technology Person vs. the Supernatural Person vs. Fate

12 Internal Internal Conflict takes place inside of the body/mind.

13 Internal There is one type of internal conflict. There is one type of internal conflict.

14 Person vs. Self The struggle or opposition is within one character--making a tough decision, for example. A character struggling to overcome fear, addiction, emotional damage or other crippling personal issue.
