2 Definition Acupuncture: The insertion of the tips of needles into the skin at specific points for the purpose of treating various disorders by stimulating nerve impulses. Originally Chinese, this method of treatment is practiced in many parts of the world. www.dictionary.com

3 Origin of Acupuncture The earliest written record of acupuncture is the Chinese text Shiji in the 2 nd century BCE. By the year 1000 acupuncture spread from China to Japan, Korea, Vietnam and other places in East Asia. Acupuncture gained attention in the United States after Richard Nixon visited China in 1972.

4 Theory Meridians are energetic lay lines that are mapped throughout the human body. Their existence is proved boy the observation of the effect of various pressure points. These are recognized acupuncture pressure points. The Meridian system can be thought of as an energetic distribution network. In acupuncture, fine needles are inserted into the patients body in pre-selected acu-points. The effect of the needling is expected to cause changes in the pattern of the patients energy system.
