1 11/21/2011 Standards: 2 Objectives: a. Be able to figure relative lattice energies b. Be able to put + & - ions together to make molecular formulas for ionis compounds c. Be able to name more types of ionic compounds. DO NOW: 1. Which has more lattice energy and why? BeCl 2 or CsBr (hints: larger charge, bigger lattice energy smaller atom, bigger lattice energy) HOMEWORK: 1. ChemThink.com - Ionic Bonding, Ionic Formulas(10 pts) Std 2 due Tu 11/29 2. Write Chemical Formulas & Name - Practice (5 pts) Std 2 ========================================================== STAMPS: Journal 11/18 1. Ch 8.4 Sec Assess, p. 231 40-44 (2pts) Std: 2 2. Ch 8 Assess, p. 237 80-84 (3 pts) Std 2 New Stamp Sheets front side 13-15 back side 16-18

8 Rules for Making Ionic Compounds Use the oxidation # of element. For all representative elements, group # determines oxidation #. Group 1 = 1+ Group 2=2+, Gp 3=3+, Gp 6=2-, Gp 7=1- EXAMPLE: Write the correct formula with the following 2 elements: Ca & Cl Ca 2+ Cl -1 1- Since the charges are different you will need to use subscripts to indicate the ratio of ions in the formula Ca 2+ Cl 1- Step 1: Cross the charges over Ca Cl 2+ 1- Step 2: Remove + and - signs Ca Cl 2 1 Step 3: Write the completed formula, no 1's & smallest ratios CaCl 2 --- --->

10 11/22/2011 Standards: 2 Objectives: a. Be able to estimate lattice energy (LE) of ionic compounds b. Be able to name ionic compounds, binary & poly anions. DO NOW: 1. Name these molecules: FeCl 3 SnSO 4 SnBr V(CO 3 ) 2 VCl 5 VPO 4 V(C 2 H 3 O 2 ) 2 2. Last night's homework problems. HOMEWORK: 1. Enjoy Thanksgiving – be grateful for your many blessings =================================================== STAMPS: Journal 11/21 1. Write Chemical Formulas & Name - Practice (5 pts) Std 2 RESPONDERS (Roman numberals for 1-6) http://youtu.be/nrPsChYAI9g (Click on blue dot below & to the left, for YouTube video of the presentation of the following page)

11 How to use Roman numberals in naming metalic compounds where metal has more than 1 positive oxidation state: Fe 2, 3, 6 Ru 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 Nb 3, 4, 5 http://youtu.be/nrPsChYAI9g (Link for video of this presentation, copy/paste into browser address)
