3 THE NIAGARA MOVEMENT 1.civil rights group organized by W.E.B. DuBois and William Monroe Trotter in 1905.civil rightsW.E.B. DuBoisWilliam Monroe Trotter 2. After being denied admittance to hotels in Buffalo, New York, the group of 29 business owners, teachers, and clergy who comprised the initial meeting gathered at Niagara Falls.New York

4 Activism v. Accomodationism The principles behind the Niagara Movement were largely in opposition to Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of Accommodationism. BTW– 1856-- 1915

5 THE ATLANTA COMPROMISES 1895 called for avoiding confrontation over segregation and instead putting more reliance on long-term educational and economic advancement in the black community. His base was the Tuskegee Institute, a historically black college in Alabama TIME OF Lynching The speech called for black progress through education and entrepreneurship. His message was that it was not the time to challenge Jim Crow segregation and the disfranchisement of black voters in the South

7 THE ROLE OF THE BLACK WOMAN While the movement had grown to include to 170 members in 34 states by 1906, it also encountered difficulties. W.E.B. DuBois supported the inclusion of women in the Niagara Movement, William Monroe Trotter did not. -

8 THE NAACP The Niagara Movement was considered the precursor to the NAACP and many of its members, such as W.E.B. DuBois, were among the new organization’s founders.
