8. Dementia Law Clinic Making Space, in partnership with The University of Manchester, is now offering free legal advice to families and carers of people living with dementia in the Warrington area.

9. About the Clinic Our Dementia Law Clinic is a brand new service we’ve set up in partnership with the University of Manchester. It is just the second clinic in the country to offer free legal support to dementia carers. The clinic will provide advice on the many complex issues you can face when caring for someone with dementia.

10. What can we help with? We can provide advice on many different legal issues surrounding dementia, including: Advance Decisions (previously known as Advance Directives) to refuse treatment Community Care Assessments Continuing Healthcare Court of Protection Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Disputes of Best Interests for those who lack capacity Disputes of Mental Capacity Legal Power of Attorney (LPA) Provision of care (in relation to care homes) Trust and Inheritance probate

11. How does it work? The Dementia Law Clinic is hosted at Making Space’s head office in Warrington. The service is currently available to families who have a Warrington postcode, and are caring for a friend or relative with dementia. Each clinic has a morning and an afternoon session.

In the morning people are invited to join us for a drop-in session where they can find our more about dementia from the Making Space central dementia team, and we can give information and advice, and understand their individual needs and circumstances. 13. Afternoon sessions are for those people who have already attended a previous drop-in session and have been referred for a one-to-one consultation. “When someone attends a one-to-one consultation at the Dementia Law Clinic, we will discuss their case with them, clarifying the facts and legal issues. 14. Update so far… To date we have held 2 dementia law clinics which have enabled us to test the model. The time required with people attending drop-in sessions is intense and we are currently looking at ways we can accommodate this need. The next Dementia Law Clinic will be on 14 August 2015
