2. S EIZURES A seizure is an episode of disturbed brain activity that cause changes in attention or behavior. An epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person has repeated seizures over time.

3. T YPES OF S EIZURES I. Generalized Seizures Generalized tonic- clonic Myoclonic seizures Atonic seizures I. Partial Seizures Simple Motor Simple Sensory Simple Psychological Generalized tonic- clonic seizure

4. S YMPTOMS I. Generalized Seizures Generalized tonic clonic symptoms begins with stiffened limbs followed by face and limbs jerking in uncoordinated movements. Absence symptoms include sporadic, jerking movements. Myoclonic symptoms begin with rapid contraction in the muscles and jerking movement along with clumsiness. Atonic symptoms include abrupt loss of muscle tone and falling without warning. I. Partial Seizures 1. Simple Simple motor symptoms include jerking, muscle rigidity, spasms, and head- turning. Simple sensory symptoms include unusual sensations affecting either vision, hearing, smell, taste, or touch. 1. Complex symptoms include automatisms such as lip chewing smacking, chewing, fidgeting walking and other repetitive, involuntary but coordinated movements.

Down syndrome, Angelman’s syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis Down syndrome is a congenital disorder from chromosome defect; physical abnormalities including short stature and a broad facial profile. Angel’s syndrome is a rare disability and tendency toward jerky movement; inherited from the mother. Tuberous sclerosis is a group of two disorders affecting the heart, kidneys, brain/ nervous system, and cause tumors to grow. Neurofibromatosis is a disease in which a neurofibromatosis forms in the body. 1. Brain tumor 2. Infections such as meningitis or encephalitis Meningitis is an inflammation caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Encephalitis is an inflammation caused by a allergic reaction.
