2 Learning Targets I can describe the importance of heraldry during the Medieval time period. I can create my own coat of arms. I can identify status symbols in my society today and discuss their importance.

3 What is a Coat of Arms? Heraldry is a very old visual language that was originally used to identify warriors on the battlefield. Later employed by families and countries. Men in armor looked alike, so each knight had to chose a symbol and color to distinguish himself from all the others. In civilian life they were used to identify their possessions and official documents. He wore these identifications first on his shield, and later on the surcoat over his armor.

4 Expansion of Use Upper class families passed coats of arms from one generation to another. They became so complex that a group of people called “heralds” regulated and documented each one.
