3  Raised in Normandy  At 22, Monet joined the Paris studio of the academic history painter Charles Gleyre  Classmates where future Impressionists  Did not experience a lot of success during his youth

4  Found subjects to paint in his immediate surroundings:  First wife: Camille  Second wife: Alice  Frequent visits from great artists, Manet and Renoir  Often painted with Monet while teaching him
