2 Energy Drinks and Food Does It Really Work? Dakota Oeskovic 9 th Grade Health What is in an energy drink? What does it do to my body? What food groups can give me energy? What are some healthy ways to boost my energy?

3 What is an energy drink?  A beverage that contains large amounts of caffeine.  Range from 75mg- 200mg. (Coke- 38mg. Mountain Dew- 55mg)  Rockstar 8oz- 80mg.  Red Bull 8.4oz- 80mg  Monster 16oz- 160mg  5-Hour Energy 2oz- 207mg.  Starbucks Coffee12oz- 260mg

4 Mixed with alcohol?  Energy drinks = stimulant  Alcohol = depressant  Mixed together can mask how intoxicated you are.  Research shows people drink more and have higher BAC’s when combined.  Major dehydration!!!

5 Side affects?  Palpitations  Tremors/ shaking  Agitation/restlessness  Gastrointestinal upset  Chest pain  Dizziness  Paraesthesia (tingling or numbing of the skin)  Insomnia  Respiratory distress  Headache

7 Energy Drinks and the Heart  A research in New Orleans found that drinking 1-3 energy drinks a day can mess up your heart rhythm.  It could also increase your blood pressure, cause irregular heartbeat, and if severe enough, cardiac death.  Studied people ages 18-45, found their systolic blood pressure increased 3.5 points!

8 Weight gain or loss?  There are limited research showing energy drinks help with weight loss.  Claims to increase metabolism therefore promote weight loss.  Energy used to workout longer or extra reps, no weight loss from the drink itself.  Contains hundreds of calories, taking up your liquid caloric intake for the day. Doesn’t really help lose or gain weight.

9 Effects on the Liver  Energy drinks contain herbal concentrate products like taurine.  Overabundance of this can lead to liver damage or liver failure.  People with type-2 diabetes at much higher risk for liver failure!

10 Natural Energy Boosters  Listening to music an hour a day can help reduce fatigue.  Touching smooth objects with your hands causes your heart rate to decrease.  Being around the color Yellow helps to brighten your mood.  The smell of peppermint can help reduce stress.  A mix of cooling and tangy citrus flavors and boost up your energy by activating the nerves in your mouth, throat, and nasal cavity.

13  Eating breakfast every morning is a great way to kick start your metabolism.  It gives you energy first thing in the morning.  Helps you make healthy choices throughout the day

14 Foods  Water: Water is a integral part of keeping all the cells in your body hydrated and working at optimum levels  Almonds: When eaten raw and unsalted, almonds are a good source of healthy fats and protein to balance blood sugar levels. One ounce of almonds can reduce your risk for cardio vascular disease.

18 Food (cont.)  Lentils: Lentils and other legumes like chickpeas or kidney beans stabilize blood glucose levels and can help prevent a mid afternoon crash and keep you on your toes.  Eggs: Eggs are high in iron and protein to give you sustainable energy throughout the day. “Choline is a type of B-vitamin that is found in eggs that is required for brain function and energy production.”- Stinson-Burt.

19 Food (cont.)  Whole Grains: Wheat, kamut, spelt, oats or even brown rice, the complex carbs, fiber, B-vitamins and iron will keep you energized until your next meal.  Citrus Fruits: Lemons and limes are rich in Vitamin-C which can boost your body’s immune system.  Ginger Tea- Ginger infused tea is filled with antioxidants and nutrients that can give you that afternoon boost!

20 Food (cont.)  Greek Yogurt: Yogurts of all sorts contain probiotics, which are well known for being a key part of healthy digestion. They can also help fight a weak immune system and boost your energy levels.  Kale: Kale is also known as a superfood. High in vitamins and minerals, kale is a great energy booster and key source of calcium. “If you want to cook it, make sure to cook it well in oil and balsamic vinegar in order to endure that all the energy producing vitamins and minerals are easily digestible and absorbed for use in the body”- Stinson-Burt.

21 Conclusion  Energy drinks can cause irregular heart beats and cardiovascular problems, as well as liver problems.  The side effects from an energy drink aren’t worth drinking them just to get energy.  Energy from natural foods and the proper sleep is all you need!
