Wind Lab Investigation 1

How is wind created?  Atmosphere contains all of the Earth’s gases. Nitrogen and Oxygen.  Atmospheric Pressure: When gas molecules build up in an area of the atmosphere.  Air molecules move from areas of high atmospheric pressure to areas of low atmospheric pressure.

 The greater the difference in air pressure, from one place to another, the stronger the wind blows.

How is wind speed and direction observed or measured?  Wind Vane: Shows the direction the wind is blowing from.  Shows wind moving from high atmospheric pressure to low atmospheric pressure.

Anemometer  Revolving cups catch the wind and begins to spin.  Wind speed is determined by the number of times the cups spin in a complete circle for one minute.

Beaufort Wind Scale Pg. 5

Wind Lab   Explain how wind is created. (10 pts)   How is wind speed and direction observed and measured. Includes a copy of the Beaufort wind scale (15 pts).   Give step-by-step directions on how to make a homemade anemometer. (10 pts)   Important vocabulary: atmosphere, atmospheric pressure, molecules (5 pts)   Instrument notes (5 pts)
