Dr. John F. Farella, M.D., FACS Breast augmentation Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure where breasts are enlarged by inserting a gel breast implant under the breast or under the breast and chest muscle.

Dr. John F. Farella, M.D., FACS Myth 1 The silicone gel implants are both dangerous and causes diseases. Fact: Scientific studies and research has proven that silicone gel implants do not cause any diseases and are not dangerous to the body.

Dr. John F. Farella, M.D., FACS Myth 2 It's better to use saline implants than silicone gel filled implants. Fact: Both the implants are different and have their own advantages and disadvantages. Consult the doctor before choosing the implant.

Dr. John F. Farella, M.D., FACS Myth 3 If a breast is smaller than the other (which is usual), you have to put a larger implant in the smaller breast to equal the larger breast. Fact: Matching breasts is not as simple as this. This is because the smaller breast has less skin when compared to the larger breast. So by putting a larger implant into this smaller skin envelope, there is a significant difference in shape and not size. It is however possible to match breasts as closely as possible, but it's done with a more complex procedure.

Dr. John F. Farella, M.D., FACS Myth 4 Avoid lifting your arms above your head, driving and lifting normal objects for a week after the breast augmentation. Fact: Doctors encourage patients to do all this after the procedure. It is based on how the surgery is done, and your doctor will tell you what should and should not be done after the surgery.

Dr. John F. Farella, M.D., FACS Myth 5 There is some bruising after breast augmentation. Fact: Only 2% of the patients have bruising after breast augmentation.

Dr. John F. Farella, M.D., FACS Myth 6 You have to wear drain tubes in your body after breast augmentation. Fact: In a first time augmentation, drain tubes are practically not required if state-of-art techniques are used for creating the implant pocket. It is only after reoperations that a drain tube may be required.
