TKaM Test Format What you need to know to be successful on your test!
Characters Be able to identify characters from the novel by their description This will be a matching section True or False Tell whether a statement about the novel’s plot is true or false
Multiple Choice Answer multiple choice questions about the plot and author’s style of writing Matching Match characters with their motivating influences throughout the novel (you will have to understand the characters at a deeper level to do well on this portion; however, most students are able to get all of these correct)
Vocabulary Be able to read a sentence and identify what a word means in the context of that sentence. Some of these will be vocabulary words you have had; some will not. You will have a bank of answers below to choose from, so you will mostly be looking to show me that you can understand the dialect of the novel. Most Important Statement You will be given half a statement about the plot, setting, theme, author’s voice, style, or tone and will need to choose the best statement out of four to complete the original statement.
One False Answer You will be given a statement and four answers. One of the answers will be false, and three will be correct. You will need to choose the answer that is false. (These are the ones that students have the most trouble with each year, so make sure you are paying close attention to these!) Philosophy of Life You will be given a character’s name and four quotes. You will need to choose the two quotes that best fit the character’s philosophy of life. Again, students struggle each year with these-sometimes because they do not follow the instructions to give TWO answers! Please pay close attention to these!)
Rhetorical Devices and Strategies/Triangle You will be given a list of quotes from famous speeches. You will be asked to identify which rhetorical device from the list that we studied in class each quote is. You will be given an excerpt from a piece of writing. You will be asked to write a short answer response about the way the author establishes logos within the piece, what establishes ethos for the author, and how the author establishes pathos with his audience.
Final Thoughts While this test is not easy, I know you know the material and can do well on it. You can use this test to increase your test average in the class tremendously. Look at it as an opportunity or a challenge, not a burden!
