2 Comparing student success between developmental math offered online, blended, and face-to-face Face-to-face environment: The students in this environment consisted of students meeting in a classroom setting for three hours (two days or three days) a week. Professor meetings were conducted through office hours and emails. Online environment: The students in this environment accessed all materials through online course management software. Professor meetings were done online only. Blended environment: The students in this environment had access to all online materials as well as face-to- face class meetings. Professor meetings were conducted through both office hours and online. Results: After all data was collected and analyzed, the study revealed that the students in the online and blended environment were not as successful in math as in the face-to-face environment. However, of the students that completed all assignments, the students in the online class were the most successful. 3 Can Distance Learning Meet the Needs of Gifted Elementary Math Students? Purpose: This article is about a teacher’s experience with using distance learning to help accelerate a gifted student in math. Supporting Our Beliefs: Research supports that most gifted students are performing 1 – 3 grades beyond their grade level on achievement tests. This observation helps conclude that students should be given content that matches their level of attainment rather than their age. Getting Started: It was decided that the student would use a mathematics acceleration distance learning technology course to help him grow his knowledge. This program was started the first week of school. The program used provided a score after each lesson which both parents and teachers can access. He can not move on to the next level until he successful completed the current level with a score of 85% or better. Conclusions: Though there were some difficulties in the beginning, it was observed that the student grew almost 3 full grade levels during the use of the distance learning program for one school year. The program also helped the teacher to understand better how to teach and reach gifted mathematics students through different techniques and lessons. 4 The Pros and Cons of Math Online Programs Purpose: This article will show the pros and cons of distance learning for struggling math students. The Pros: You control your time Lack of pressure Less expenses Visual learning The Cons: Tendency to put things off until tomorrow Lack of Personal Interaction Conclusion: The article concludes that the pros of distance learning out way the cons. The only concern the article states is the student must be self motivated to complete a course in this manor. This form of learning can help a struggling student with concepts they are lacking knowledge in. It can also aid the student who is weak in a specific area of mathematics.
