3. The first task will be to decide the subject of your cyberhunt – your teacher (the Boss) may tell you the subject. It may be a place you are studying in geography (like Porthcawl). It may be on a period in History you are currently studying. It may be a science quiz… All cyberhunts have to start somewhere!

4. Once you have decided on a topic, you will need to find some useful websites. This is where you will HAVE to rely on your web browser. Before we do this, let’s remind ourselves of some important safety rules to remember when using the internet. Click on the link below… Internet Safety

5. Now let’s remember how to use your web browser. On your web browser you will see these buttons... They will help you to move around the different websites. Click on the link below to remind yourself of their functions. Then complete the quiz on page 2. Browser Information

6. To make your own Cyberhunt you will need to be able to search the Internet quickly and effectively. To do this you will have to use a search engine. One of the most popular engines is ‘Google’

7. All you have to do is visit a search engine, type in the subject you would like to find out about and it will give you a list of suggested websites for you to explore. Type your subject in here

8. Here are some search engines that you could try… www.google.co.uk www.yahooligans.co.uk www.askjeevesforkids.co.uk www.altavista.co.uk www.lycos.co.uk

9. Of course sometimes the search engine might give you information which is not what you are really looking for. You can make it easier for yourself by learning these techniques…  Make sure you spell your words correctly  Use Key words Key words are important words that relate to your topic. For example, if you were researching the topic ‘weather’, key words may include: weather, climate, clouds, temperature.

10. More techniques… Put speech marks around phrases that must come together in the order given. For example: ‘search engine’ will give you results for search engines (which is what you want) but search engine will give you results on search and engine separately.

11. One more technique…  Use a + sign to show key words that must be included in your search. Example: in a list of keywords researching clouds you may have put in keywords like ‘clouds’, ‘weather’, ‘temperature. You would not necessarily want the words weather and temperature but you would definitely want the word cloud.

12. And another one… Use a – sign to show words that must not be included in your search. Example: If you were researching the topic ‘football’ but did not want results on ‘American football’ you could put a – sign in front of ‘American’ to stop references to American football coming up.
