BECKMAN HIGH SCHOOL Priority Tutorial: EL Students

Welcome

What is an “EL” Student? “EL” students started school as an English Language Learner. A student might be able to write speak everyday English pretty well, but they need to show that they have strong Academic English. Being “fluent” or “good” at English is not the only way to be redesignated as a Fluent English Proficient student (FEP).

Redesignation Once students are identified as English Learners, in order to be reclassified as R-FEP, they must demonstrate proficiency in English. Proficiency and fluency means that you are able to be academically successful in your classes and on tests. You may be able to speak English, but can you show that you can do well in all your classes and on tests?

Why do we care? You may be wondering why Beckman or any school in California and America cares about this. We care about your progress because we need to know who is becoming fluent in English. We can look at what we are doing for students who succeed and continue that good teaching. We can also look at students who are not doing well and provide special programs for those students, so they can be more successful in school and life.

Why do we care? Beckman’s school Academic Progress is measured by many factors, and the EL test and Redesignation scores are part of the results. When you do well, our school’s reputation in Orange County, California, and the US gets better. This can also help you when you are thinking of going to college. Colleges will respect that you came from a high-level school.

Why should you care? There are many reasons why we care about your success, but what are the reasons for you to care about and work towards Redesignation?

Reasons for Redesignation Doing well at Beckman will allow you to have additional opportunities in the future. If you are an “EL” student, we will be working to put you in classes to give you extra support. This is great for students who need it, but it might not be necessary for students who are not trying on tests, such as the CELDT. You will show your progress as a student, and you will show that you are successful. Honestly, you are busy and working hard here at Beckman. You will have one less thing to worry about.

What does it take to be Redesignated? To be redesignated to a “Fluent English Proficient” student, you need ALL of the following. Look at your information sheet. CST Score or CMA Score of 325 or higher in Math and English A Beckman GPA of 2.0 or higher A CELDT Score of 4 or 5 in all levels, with only one 3 allowed in one level. Overall Score of 4 or 5. A Proficient Score (Rubric Score 3) on a Beckman Writing Assessment in English.

What Can You Do Now? Focus on your grades. We have tutors for any student who asks, and we will assign tutors for students who are “EL” if we see a need. This will help you do well. Do your best on the tests. If you know you can get a high score, do your best, and you will have a great chance of being Redesignated as Fluent English Proficient.

Adequate Response Something I would like to do is work on cars. I like mechanics, and I like to fix things at home. I would like to work on cars because it is very fun for me. I learned a little bit already because my brother showed me how. When I am bored, that is what I do in my free time. In the future, I might make money working on cars, or I can save money by working on my own car. So, something I want to learn to do is work on cars.
