First Aid Project WOUNDS Abrasions, Lacerations, Punctures, Avulsions By: Hayley Boylan & Stormie Crow Mrs. Seeger Health-2 October 15, 2012

2 abrasion is a type of wound in which the skin is scraped or rubbed off
ABRASIONS abrasion is a type of wound in which the skin is scraped or rubbed off SYMPTOMS Bleeding from the abrasion Skin pain Skin swelling Skin tenderness Complete or partial loss of skin layers SIGNS Red streaks that spread from the abrasion bleeding SYMPTOMS OF DEEP ABRASIONS INCLUDE: Numbness to the skin around the abrasion Severe bleeding Weakness of the muscles around the abrasion Worsening swelling

3 PROPER CARE AND CLEANING
cleaning the wound with mild soap and water or a mild antiseptic wash like hydrogen peroxide covering the area with an antibiotic ointment and a dry dressing. severe abrasion should be seen and cleaned by a physician PREVENTION most abrasions happen when a person is involved in biking, skating, or skateboarding so protective gear should be worn like elbow pads, knee pads, and appropriate clothing to prevent yourself from getting an abrasion

4 LACERATIONS SYMPTOMS OF AN INFECTED LACERATION INCLUDE: SYMPTOMS
Are torn, rather than cut. They have ragged, irregular edges and masses of torn tissue underneath.  These wounds are usually made by blunt, rather than sharp, objects. SYMPTOMS OF AN INFECTED LACERATION INCLUDE: Fever Pus draining from the wound Worsening swelling Swollen glands Worsening pain SYMPTOMS Symptoms of a skin laceration include: Skin pain Skin tenderness Bleeding from the skin wound Skin swelling Skin bruising Inability to move the injured area Loss of function Numbness and tingling

5 PROPER CARE AND CLEANING
Clean the area with warm water and gentle soap. Apply an antibiotic ointment to reduce chance of infection. Put a sterile bandage on the area PREVENTION To keep the surface of your skin away from sharp objects. Always follow instructions and precautions when using knives and saws, as well as other tools and machinery that could potentially cause harmful or fatal damage

8 AVULSIONS Tenderness Pain Swelling Weakness SYMPTOMS
Injuries where a section of tissue is torn off, either partially or in total. In partial avulsions, the tissue is elevated but remains attached to the body. A total avulsion means that the tissue is completely torn from the body SYMPTOMS Tenderness Pain Swelling Weakness

9 PROPER CARE AND CLEANING PREVENTION
Control bleeding with direct pressure and elevation, avoiding tourniquets unless bleeding cannot be controlled then you should seek medical help from a hospital Rinse with water or saline. The cleaner the better Be safe!
