Reading a Straight Edge Created By: Dr. A. Dávila
3
Look at your straight edge closely to identify the customary (in for inches, ft for feet) or the metric side (cm for centimeter, mm for millimeter).
4
Most straight edge rulers have an excess edge.
5
If it does have an excess edge, start measuring from the first mark.
6
Each number identifies a whole. 1 centimeter
7
Notice the longer line segment and its corresponding number. whole centimeter
8
Notice the longer line segment and its corresponding number. This identifies the first whole centimeter. whole centimeter
9
Count the number of spaces between each line segment. Each space represents a millimeter. How many millimeters make a whole centimeter? fractions of a centimeter
10
Notice the first small line segment. This small line segment represents the first millimeter (on the meter side of a straight edge). 1 millimeters or 0.1 (1/10) of a cm
11
Notice the first small line segment. This small line segment represents the first millimeter (on the meter side of a straight edge). 2 millimeters or 0.2 (2/10 or 1/5) of a cm
12
Notice the first small line segment. This small line segment represents the first millimeter (on the meter side of a straight edge). 3 millimeters or 0.3 (3/10) of a cm
13
Notice the first small line segment. This small line segment represents the first millimeter (on the meter side of a straight edge). 4 millimeters or 0.4 (4/10 or 2/5) of a cm
14
Notice the first small line segment. This small line segment represents the first millimeter (on the meter side of a straight edge). 5 millimeters or 0.5 (5/10 or 1/2) of a cm
15
It takes 10 millimeters to make a whole centimeter. one centimeter one millimeter
16
How many centimeters make a whole decimeter? one decimeter
17
It takes 10 centimeters to make a whole decimeter. How many decimeters make a meter? one decimeter is equal to 10 cm
18
It takes 10 centimeters to make a whole decimeter. How many decimeters make a meter? 1/10 (0.1) of a decimeter
19
It takes 10 centimeters to make a whole decimeter. How many decimeters make a meter? 2/10 or 1/5 (0.2) of a decimeter
20
It takes 10 centimeters to make a whole decimeter. How many decimeters make a meter? 3/10 (0.3) of a decimeter
21
It takes 10 centimeters to make a whole decimeter. How many decimeters make a meter? 4/10 or 2/5 (0.4) of a decimeter
22
It takes 10 centimeters to make a whole decimeter. How many decimeters make a meter? 5/10 or 1/2 (0.5) of a decimeter

Relating the Metric System (Systéme Internationale) to the Decimal System Created By: Dr. A. Dávila
24
Meter (m) is the basic unit for length or distance
25
10 millimeters is equivalent to a centimeter
26
10 centimeters is equivalent to a decimeter
27
10 decimeters is equivalent to a meter
28
10 meters is equivalent to a dekameter
29
10 dekameters is equivalent to a hectometer
30
10 hectometers is equivalent to a kilometer
31
The metric system is similar to the decimal system.
32
Each place to the right is 10 times greater than the previous multiply by 10
33
Each place to the left is 10 times smaller than the previous place divide by 10
34
6 kilometers is equal to
35
6 kilometers is equal to 60 hectometers
36
600 dekameters
37
6 kilometers is equal to 60 hectometers 600 dekameters 6000 meters
38
6 kilometers is equal to 60 hectometers 600 dekameters 6000 meters 60000 decimeters
39
6 kilometers is equal to 60 hectometers 600 dekameters 6000 meters 60000 decimeters 600000 centimeters
