Geology Bundle 3 review

Layers of the Earth Convection currents in the mantle drive the plate to move on the surface.

Pangaea Wegener thought Africa and South America fit just about a perfectly.

2. Evidence for Continental Drift Evidence for : – Fossils of same organisms found on different continents – SEA FLOOR SPREADING ocean floor is getting bigger – Wegener thought Africa and South America fit together like puzzle pieces http://www.suu.edu/faculty/col berg/hazards/platetectonics/18 _Pangaea.html Sea floor spreading http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/ eoc/teachers/t_tectonics/p _seafloorspreading.html http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/ eoc/teachers/t_tectonics/p _seafloorspreading.html

14. Plate Tectonics Plate tectonics theory That the lithosphere is moving on the asthenosphere and plates: Converge (collide) Diverge ( separate) Transform (move past ) Alfred Wegener’s theory Is the most widely Accepted. HOW DO THEY MOVE? Convection Currents in the Mantle!!!!!

1 and 12 Sea Floor Spreading Evidence for Continental Drift Mid Ocean Ridge Where plates diverge And magma seeps up To create under water Mountain ridges

7. Red lines are mid-ocean ridges where the sea floor is spreading

3 and 8. How do Mountains Form 3 types of plate boundaries Convergent: plates collide Divergent : plates separate Transform: plate slide past one another Subduction is where a continental plate and oceanic plate collide. The oceanic plate sinks beneath the continental plate. CONVERGENT Convergent Plates create mountains. Subduction can create mountains and sometimes volcanoes.

10, 11 and 12 Contour maps Show elevation and shape of crustal features on the Earth’s surface. Usually start at sea level The closer the lines the steeper the incline The smallest circle represents the peak. Look for the key just like on a regular map

4, 6 and 13 Effects on land formations due to Weathering and Erosion The Grand Canyon was created by the process of weathering and erosion from the Colorado River that runs through it. Weathering is the breaking down and erosion is the carrying away of the canyon down the river. The sediment most likely accumulates near the mouth of the river where it opens up to the ocean.

5 and 9 Past bundles Information Energy Transformations From a Hot air balloon – Chemical to thermal to Mechanical What causes opposite seasons in the hemispheres? THE TILT OF THE AXIS!!
