W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Problem Statement The latest MCAS practice test results showed that BCLA 10th grade students did poorly on the SA and OR questions and showed large knowledge gaps in geometry and measurement.

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Proposed Solution With less than 2 weeks (see schedule next page) left to prepare students to strengthen these areas of weakness, I proposed utilizing the Select Math interactive website as a diffrentiated approach to helping students understand and manipulate geometric measurements.

MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Standard: Measurement 10.M.1; 10.M.2, 10.M.3 Objective: To help 10 grade students at BCLA improve performance on MCAS measurement problems To help students understand, use and manipulate measurement formulas found on the 10 grade MCAS Mathematics reference sheet (next slide).

MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements To get to the select math web site, follow these steps: http://boston.k12.ma.us Select O.I.T Select O.I.T Select Math Select Math Geometry Alignments Geometry Alignments

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Sample Lesson/Activity Once in select math geometry alignments area, scroll down to chapter 13, and click on ‘volume’. Select 13.1 ‘Volume as a function of height and base area’. The next few pages are screen shots of various problems found in this section.

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Start with having students guess how high the liquid will go in the empty container.

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements We see here the students first guess was off. This could be tried a few times in the guessing mode

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Click on new problem to get a new problem. This time guide student to the correct formula from the MCAS reference sheet.

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 In this case we are trying to find the volume of a rectangular prism V=lwh. Therefore, container 1 has 3*3*6=54. We do not know the ‘h’ of the empty container so V=2*4*h=54 or 8h=54. Solve for h=54/8=6.75. Now have students move pointer as close to 6.75 as possible on the empty container and click on pour. 14 W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Wow, see what knowing how to use the formula can do. Students normally get rather excited around this time.

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements This can be tried a few times using the various type of shapes problems, see lower left of the screen shot. This can be tried a few times using the various type of shapes problems, see lower left of the screen shot.

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 Again help students identify the right formula, by asking some guiding questions: What geometric are we trying to find? What geometric are we trying to find? What is the shape of the object? What is the shape of the object? Which formula do we use for this one? MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements

MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Using the right circular cylinder formula of V=pi r^2h For the filled cylinder we get: For the filled cylinder we get: V=3.14*4*3=37.68 V=3.14*4*3=37.68 For the empty cylinder we get: For the empty cylinder we get: V=3.14*9*h or 28.6h=37.68 V=3.14*9*h or 28.6h=37.68 Solve for h=37.68/28.6=1.33 Solve for h=37.68/28.6=1.33 Have students move pointer as close as possible to 1.33 Have students move pointer as close as possible to 1.33 Click on pour Click on pour

W. Nicholls (BCLA) May 4th 2005 MCAS Prep. Lesson Plan for 10 Grade Geometry Geometric Measurements Technology Requirements To utilize the selected math and other interactive on line resources teachers will need the following: For whole class instruction: In-focus machine or smart board In-focus machine or smart board A laptop or other portable computer A laptop or other portable computer Access to the internet Access to the internet For one on one remedial type instruction Access to a computer lab/learning center with internet access. Additional Training For additional training on these interactive resources contact the select math training coordinator Saiaja Suresh via e-mail at: ssuresh@boston.k12.ma.us
