Concentration The central ideas of my concentration are isolation and fear of the outside world. I wanted to explore the contrasts between the world someone creates inside and a world they imagine outside. My concentration mainly shows how a fear of the outside world pushes people to isolate themselves. I used a combination of photography and paint to portray this idea. The dark, monochromatic photographs of the person inside contrast with the bright and other worldly swirls showing how fear and isolation force the person to miss out on what is happening outside. In concentration 7 I used complementary colors to show this contrast. I also duplicated and overlapped the photo to show how he is standing in his own way of going outside. In concentration 3 I used perspective to make the window panes look more like a prison door that is stopping him from leaving his house. Concentration 1 shows him almost struggling to get out, through the bars. Concentration 11 finally shows him opening up to the idea of the outside since he is sitting directly in front of the window as oppose to off to the side of it.

Advice Do work that you can finish in a week –For my concentration I basically had the same process for each piece. This made my concentration manageable and easy for me to finish on time. –If you plan on doing a piece that will take longer than a week have it as a side project and hand in a less time consuming piece. That way you can meet the time constraints and your grade won’t be affected.

Advice Take the time to think about your concentration –Since you are going to be working on this idea for about 5 months, it is important that you like what you are doing. –Think ahead and make sure that you will be able to complete twelve pieces about the same idea –Try to think about how your idea can evolve as you work through the concentration. –Make sure there is a deeper meaning to your work. Also, consider the abstract side of your concentration before you start so you are not trying to justify a piece that doesn’t really belong with your other work.

Advice Try to improve/experiment within your medium –For the first few pieces I was having trouble with the camera and not doing much with the photographs in Photoshop. Towards the end of the concentration my photographs improved as I started to experiment with different angles and more dramatic lighting. I also started working with more of the Photoshop tools which helped me to further manipulate the color and lighting of the photographs.

Artists Michael Chapman Michael Chapman’s art is similar to my concentration in that he often incorporates windows into his work. Although his pieces are painted realistically he incorporates a sense of surrealism. There are also a few similarities in his use of color and lighting.

This painting shows realistic figures in a surreal situation. This is similar to my concentration in that I tried to add a surreal aspect to a realistic photograph. Also, inside is mostly dark while the outside uses more color. “Dark Visit”

“ Apartment For Rent” This is similar to some of the monochromatic pieces in my concentration because the inside and outside are mostly the same colors. This proves that differences between the inside and outside can be done with different lighting.
