2 Intertextuality: The idea that all texts are linked and we understand them better if we know the links. Why do we use this intertextuality?  Reference to another text creates another layer of meaning  Makes it more challenging and interesting to the responder  Creates an ‘experience' for the responder

3 Allegory: an extended metaphor whereby the responder is exposed to another story or interpretation within a narrative on a much deeper level. Why do we use allegory?  Often makes difficult subjects easier to understand  Enables the writer/storyteller to entertain while he/she teaches moral lessons or acceptable behaviour
