Welcome to our Compact & Parent Involvement Plan (“PIP”) Parent Training

2 What is Title I ? Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools. The goal of Title I is a higher quality of education for every child. The funds are given to the Local Educational Agency (LEA), which is the District, to be dispersed to the schools. A school qualifies as Title I because more than 75% of the students receive free and reduced lunch.

3 How do we use our Title I funds?
Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding (Title I dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. School’s use Title I funds to: Increase student achievement Create smaller class sizes by adding extra teachers Add academic coaches to their staff Add paraprofessionals to assist students Purchase materials and supplies Provide tutoring Offer extra professional development for our teachers Purchase software Conduct parental Informational meetings/trainings/activities

5 Input on spending Title I Parent Involvement Funds
To use funds for Parent Involvement Activities the activity must meet the following criteria: Educate the parents on Title I. Be educationally based (Language Arts, Math or Science). Have educational interaction between the parent and student.

6 What research says about Parent Involvement in Children’s education
Decades of research shows that when parents are involved students have: Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates Better school attendance Increased motivation, better self-esteem Lower rates of suspension Decreased use of drugs and alcohol Fewer instances of violent behavior

8 Level 1- Involvement Responsibilities & Attendance
See that my child attends school regularly and on time Equip my child with necessary school supplies Provide the school with current demographic information Provide a home environment that encourages learning Encourage positive school feelings

9 Level 2 – Involvement Communication & Support
Meet my child’s teacher Talk with my child about school activities every day Encourage my child’s efforts and be available for questions Insist that all homework assignments be completed Provide a quiet, well-lighted place to study Support the school in developing self-discipline in my child Communicate regularly with my child’s teachers by phone/letters

10 LEVEL 3 – Parent Resource Center
The resource center team consists of 3 liaisons. Each liaison is assigned to a designated area; BVL, Kissimmee/St. Cloud, and Kissimmee/Poinciana. Resources will be delivered by the Resource Center liaison directly to your school (convenience). Parents must register in order to use the Resource Center. Parents may borrow materials by contacting the Resource Center liaison. Supplemental Request Form can be completed by teacher and forwarded to parent for checkout. Parents can borrow three items per child for a two week period to use at home.

11 Items available for check-out include:
Curriculum Master FCAT readiness flash cards, and board games Bingo games for Math, Reading and Phonics Resources for English language learners Reading, Spelling and Science materials for grades K-5 Parenting books and videos on various topics A list of all items can be viewed by visiting the Parent Resource Online Catalog at Teachers may use Prescription Slips to recommend items to parents.

12 LEVEL 4 – Involvement Volunteer & Mentoring
Visit my child’s classroom Maintain regular contact with the teacher Volunteer in a needed area at school Volunteer to assist on field trips Send materials or supply items to assist in classroom activities Attend at least three SAC meetings a year Become involved in planning school activities and fund raisers Attend all parent-teacher conferences

13 LEVEL 5 – Involvement Leadership & Partnership
Become an officer of the school advisory council Participate in the decision-making process Attend trainings and workshops Train other parents and share information Become knowledgeable of current educational laws Maintain contact with lawmakers to help ensure the best educational support for all children Form a parent-teacher support group Maintain an open line of communication between the school and the community

Parents: Greater knowledge of programs and how schools work Knowledge of how to be more supportive of their children Confident in ways to help their children learn School Staff: Higher expectations Increased ability to understand family views and cultures Communities: Increased support Increased access to services for families Everyone has more appreciation of each other

15 Why do you need to be knowledgeable when it comes to the Title I Compact?
COMPLIANCE As outlined below in an excerpt from Section 1118 of the NCLB Act of 2001, teachers must have a minimum one parent conference during which the Compact is discussed as it relates to the student’s achievement. Excerpt from Section 1118 (2) address the importance of communication between teachers and parents on an ongoing basis through, at a minimum-(A) parent-teacher conferences in elementary schools, at least annually, during which the Compact shall be discussed as the Compact relates to the individual child’s achievement;

17 Title I Compact Documentation Instructions
Responsible party: teachers To help you document parent meetings in relation to the Compact we have attached a form for you to use. Please follow these steps: List all the students in your classroom on the form provided. Be sure to add new students as they are assigned to your class. Place the date of the conference in the appropriate column. Have the parent sign and date the Compact on the conference date and send home a Compact with the parent. The conference date and the date on the attached form MUST be the same date. Each student MUST have a minimum of ONE date. The form will be collected at the end of the school year and returned to the Title I office.
