7 ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija Ecological campsite certificates  are encouragement for sustainable camping management and contribution to competitive position of the campsite  Some of the most recognisable certificates in european camping are: EU Flower, Ecocamping, Viabono, Green Key, Automobile associations ecological ranking (ADAC etc)  Out of 75 BEST campsites in south Europe (ADAC 5* ranking) 17 have Ecomark (23%), 11 have ISO 14001 label, 4 EU Ecolabel, 3 EMAS label and 6 are members of Ecocamping  In Croatia: Certificates: „Friend of enviroment”

Secundary research of available camping literature in Croatia and Europe

9 ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija Research results:  Creation of selected system of a) comparable indicator sof sustainable management in hotels and campsites b) comparable indicators of implementation of enviromental management in Croatian camps and hotels  Definition of selected indicators of sustainability in camps and hotels in Croatia: Energy cost per m2 and per overnights, maintenance costs per m2 or per unit, share of green surfaces per unit in m2 and other  Definition of selected indikators for implementing the enviromental management system in Croatia camps and hotels: Energy management system, HACCP, ISO 9001, ISO14001 and others

10 ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija Conclusions:  Significant differences in sustainability indicators between camps and hotels  Comparison of Indicators of sustainable management shows that sustainability is significantly higher in campsites than in hotels  Space utilisation and energy use – more sustainable indicators in campsites  Hotels implement environmental management systems more than a camp sites - space for improvement for camping competitiveness  Enviromental certificates in Croatian campsites compared with european indicates thet there are further space for improvement
