Acid Rain By Bushra Shaikh 7E

What is acid rain? Acid rain is a phrase relating to deposition of nitric and sulfuric acid and sometimes carbonic acid in rainwater. This gives rainwater a faintly acidic pH level. Most of the acid rain is caused by anthropogenic activity.

How is it caused? Acids such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid and carbonic acid dissolve in rain water which Carbon dioxide and water creates carbonic acid H 2 CO 3 It can also occur as snow, fog and pieces of dry material deposited in earth. Some of the acid rain is created by combustion from fossil fuels such as coal. Most of the fossil fuels are used to run transportation and this causes the release of carbon dioxide, if the carbon dioxide mixes with water it turns into carbonic acid which also one of the acids in acid rain.

What are the effects? Acid rain can damage forests since the acidity and take away the vital nutrition needed for the plant organisms to survive. It can also deposit aluminum making it hard for plants to take in water. Acid rain can also be harmful to the aquatic life. The deposited aluminum eventually gets it’s way from soil into the lakes, streams and rivers and brings harm to some aquatic life because of it’s acidity.

How can it be prevented? In the US in 2002 about 67% of the sulfur dioxide released was from electric power plant. We could replace some of these plants by using more environmental friendly sources such as solar power. We could look more carefully at how much waste we produce everyday and find more convenient ways to help reduce these wastes. Fuel combustion is also another dangerous way of releasing sulfur dioxide, if we can burn less fuel and instead find other ways to
