Processes that Shape the Earth
Weathering and Erosion

Evidence of Erosion The soil next to this house was eroded by water. What are some things that the homeowner could have done to slow down this process?

Erosion and Deposition
What caused the erosion shown and why what is the evidence of deposition?

Shoreline Erosion What caused the soil to break off and fall down in chunks?

Erosion by Glacier How will the movement of this glacier affect the mountain underneath?

Erosion by Wind Notice the difference in the amount of erosion between the areas where plants are and the areas where there are no plants. Why is it different?

Landslide! What may have caused this landslide and how could it have been prevented?

Landslides! Where do you think these huge rocks came from? How did they get here?

Caution!! Falling Rock!! Why would you need to be careful walking or driving by here?

Weathering Notice how smooth and rounded the rock is. Do you think they were always this smooth?

Mount Rushmore The features on the statues weren’t always as smooth as they are today. Why do you think this is true?

Grand Canyon Notice how the left hand side of the river valley is sharply cut and the other side is shallower and has smaller particles. Why do you think the direction of the water had this effect?

Grand Canyon This is a picture of part of the Grand Canyon from the air. Notice the way the water has cut into the rock .

Grand Canyon This picture shows the canyon from ground level inside the canyon. Notice how the particles that have been deposited are small.

Volcano!! Sometimes changes can happen to the earth rapidly like in a volcano.

Earthquakes!!! Earthquakes are another rapid change that can happen to the earth.

Earthquakes! Earthquakes can be very dangerous to people and make their houses impossible to live in.

Mountains Erode Over Time
Why the difference? Rocky Mountains Appalachian Mountains Baby mountains in terms of how long they’ve been around Old man mountains in terms of how long they’ve been around.

Now, to your exit slip. Read the directions on your exit slip. Be sure to identify one natural process and identify the evidence shown in the picture.

Natural Processes Shape the Earth
Can you find evidence in this picture of A rockslide? Deposition? Erosion by water? Erosion by wind?
