Purpose: to discuss plans for 2016 Commence Monday 23 rd February Scheduled during your spare periods Schedule on Careers Noticeboard; Check day/time of your interview – esp if period 1! Year 11 students Review Career Plan during Wellbeing on 5 th May Interviews not compulsory – appointments welcome

12 WHAT DOES VTAC DO? VTAC - Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre http://www.vtac.edu.au/ Administers the application and offer process for places in tertiary institutions VTAC also ▫ Calculates and issues the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) ▫ Administers SEAS (Special Entry Access Scheme) ▫ Administers scholarship applications VTAC applications open early August

13 Researching courses on VTAC website http://www.vtac.edu.au/ CourseSearch – general course search function available to the public CourseLink – search function for students in years 9-12. – log in is your Student Number (see Ms Glanvill or Ms MacKay) – password is first 4 digits of your DOB. Major advantages of CourseLink are ability to search by ATAR and prerequisite VCE subjects. NB: Always refer to individual institution websites for more detailed course information

14 What is SEAS? Special Entry Access Scheme SEAS allows selection officers to grant extra consideration for course entry to applicants who have experienced educational disadvantage, Categories of disadvantage: –Medical –Difficult circumstances –Financial –Non-English speaking background

15 SEAS SEAS applications require preparation! For all categories except Non-English speaking background, you must: –Prepare an Impact Statement –Obtain a Statement of Support from a person who is familiar with your circumstances, e.g.: doctor, teacher etc. If you think you may be eligible to apply for SEAS, see Ms Glanvill for assistance.

25 If you don’t get into your preferred course or institution: DON’T PANIC!! If you don’t meet the prerequisites to get into your preferred course, there are a number of options open to you. Consider: Starting with a lower qualification, e.g.: a Diploma at TAFE. Diplomas are equivalent to 1 st year uni. You can usually transfer into the 2 nd year of the uni degree a similar course with a lower ATAR at the same institution The same/similar course at a different uni – with a lower ATAR A regional uni/campus – ususally have lower ATARS. Apply to transfer into 2 nd year at preferred campus/uni Dual sector institutions A degree at TAFE Private Colleges

26 Pathway institutions Most offer diplomas and you can transfer into 2 nd year of related uni degree some are linked to specific unis. –MIBT (Melbourne Institute of Technology – linked to Deakin) –La Trobe Melbourne –Monash College –Diploma of Tertiary Studies (Monash) –MIT (Melbourne Institute of Technology –Swinburne UniLink –Victoria Uni Plan B

27 VTAC preferences You can enter up to 12 courses on your VTAC application Assistance to complete your application – always ensure plan B is included You have a week after you receive your results to change your course preferences

28 A WORD ABOUT THE ATAR Good luck this year –try your best and work hard, but remember: The only thing the ATAR determines is your starting point. It does not determine your end point or prevent you from achieving your career goals!
