17 RPI Ambulance And The Law While working on the ambulance you will be exposed to confidential patient medical information –DO NOT SHARE PATIENT INFORMATION WITH ANYONE –Confidential medical information is on a NEED TO KNOW basis Doctors, nurses, paramedics caring for the patient NOT your friends, roommates, other ambulance members HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) When in doubt, ask your crew chief. 18 Safety Crew safety is the primary concern during all operations. You can not help the patient, if something happens to you. Examples of unsafe scenes: –Substance abusers –Assaults, weapons on scene –Hazmat incidents –Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA) –Emotionally disturbed persons, attempted suicide. –Fires, collapses, animal bites, CO poisoning. Do not enter a scene that is not safe. Wait for fire, rescue or law enforcement personnel to secure the scene. Scene Safety Updated 08/2012RPI Ambulance Orientation17

19 Safety If its wet and sticky and not yours, don’t touch it. If you have to, wear gloves! Gloves are worn during every patient contact. Other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes: –N95 respirator masks –Goggles –Gowns The best way to prevent infection is to wash your hands! 20 Radio Communications RPIA VHF Radios –Receive dispatches –Tactical communications –Hospital Radio Reports 800 MHz Radio System –Big Expensive Radio –Talk to Rensselaer County Dispatchers –Fire Departments, Ambulances in the County Crew Chief and Driver handle these radios RPIA Radio Systems Updated 08/2012RPI Ambulance Orientation19
