Exhibit Builder Tom Rose LIS654 11/8/2011

Questions What does it do? How does it work? Why use it?

What does it do? When you access an Omeka site, you have two default options for browsing through resources. Browse Items Browse Collections Exhibit Builder adds a third: Browse Exhibits

Browse Items Browse all Displays all items flagged “public” Displays in the order items were created (most recent items at top of page) Browse by Tag Displays tag cloud Clicking a tag displays all items with that tag.

Browse Collections Display  Shows list of collections, with metadata description  View smaller selection of items as list Collections are admin-defined “groups” of items. This is one way to display items by “theme”. One collection per item!

Browse Exhibits Displays list of exhibits, with metadata Enables browsing of items without “list” view Highlights relationships between selected items. Items displayed together on one page, with commentary

How does it work? Each exhibit consists of three pieces: Exhibit  Sections Pages Each of these has its own metadata.

Exhibits Metadata Exhibit Title Exhibit Slug Exhibit Credits Exhibit Description Exhibit Tags Featured/Public Exhibit Theme Exhibit Sections Order

Sections Metadata Section Title Section Slug Section Description Pages Order

Page Metadata Page Title Page Slug Layout “Content” depends on layout

Exhibit Builder in Action Lincoln at 200 2 exhibits Sections on sidebar Pages displayed within sections All items in single collection DigitalNOBLE 10 exhibits (1 per library) Sections on sidebar Pages displayed above items Contrast with Collections view

So... why? Highlights relationships between items Add context; create narratives Consistent display Order of items does not change when new items are added to repository More engaging Lists are great, but they get boring! Increased options for customization Different themes for each exhibit, etc.
