Two Types of Weathering Pg. 58 Mechanical Weathering Examples: A type of weathering in which rocks are physically broken into smaller pieces. A physical change includes change in size and shape. Freezing and thawing, animal actions, abrasion.

Water Water weathers rock by dissolving it.

Oxygen Water + Oxygen +Iron = RUST When water and oxygen mix with Iron it creates rust. This is called oxidation. Rust video

Pair/share: Weathering or Erosion Water continently drips on a rock in the same place and slowly dissolves the rock over time. Water carries small rocks and sand down stream. Wind blows the sand pile from one area to another A tree grew in the rock and it’s roots break the rock into smaller pieces. Wind blows sand on the rock breaking it down over time.

Sediment Deposition Gravity Is the material moved by erosion. Occurs where the agents of erosion lay down the sediment. (drop it off) The force that moves rock and other sediment downhill. Gravity causes mass movement of sediment.
