2. Structure ლ ( ╹◡╹ლ ) Pore- The opening at the end of the sweat gland where gas or liquid particles pass through Hair Shaft- The non-growing part of hair that comes out of the follicle Epidermis (outer layer)- Dermis (inner layer)- Subcutaneous Tissue - Consist of mainly fat and connective tissue that has larger blood vessels and nerves under the layers of skin Hair Follicle- A hollow area that encloses a hair and it's roots Oil Gland- Secretes oily semifluid and sebum that usually opens up in the hair follicles Nerve Cells- transmit electrical signals over long distances Muscle Fibers- A contractile cell that allows movement Sweat Glands- Secretes/extrete perspiration

Function 3 Main functions of your skin: Protection, Regulation of Body Temperature, and Sensing Epidermis: *Acts as a protective shell of the body *Protects against bacteria, viruses, infections, minor injuries, and unwanted substances *Melanin provides some protection from UV rays *Hair protects and insulates the body *Nails protect the tips of toes and fingers The body is constantly replacing epidermis cells Within your lifetime, you lose and replace about 40 pounds of skin

4. Continue~ Dermis: *Nerve cells give you the sensation of: Heat, Cold, Pressure, Pain, and Contact *Regulates the body temperature by constricting the blood vessels (reducing heat loss) or expanding your blood vessels (increasing heat loss). *Sweat glands produce sweat which then evaporates. This process requires heat to function which reduces body heat. Subcutaneous Layer: *Helps conserve body heat *Stores energy *Anchors the skin to the organs under your skin

5. Disease (╥_╥) What- Cystic acne is the worst form of acne. The result of a pimple turning into a cyst. When a pimple becomes infected, it can turn into a cyst. Cystic acne forms underneath the skin. When- Occurs commonly during adolescence and sometimes continues into adulthood Where- In the oil glands within the dermis How- Sebum is released through the pores into the nearby hair follicles Why- Too much sebum which blocks pores with dirt, oil, and bacteria Cystic Acne Boy with mild acne during puberty Woman with severe Cystic Acne

6. Cure ( ≧◡≦ ) Medications Benzoyl Peroxide Antiseptics Antibiotics Salicylic Acid Surgery Mild acne can be managed with proper skin care (Washing your face daily, exfoliating, etc) Lazor treatment Surgical Lancing

Facts *The Integumentary System consists of: skin, hair, and nails *The skin is the largest organ in your body *The skin contains 3 layers: epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous layer *The skin contains pores *The body REPLACES, not repairs, epidermis cells *Most skin disorders occur because of damage to the epidermis (top layer of the skin)

Continue~ *The skin is selectively permeable (permeable to fat- soluble substances like vitamin A, D, E, C, B, etc.) *The skin, hair, and nails contain a protein called Keratin *Skin and hair contain Melanin, which determines the color (the greater the amount of Melanin, the darker the pigment) *The hair and nails grow from the epidermis
