3 Cloud ? What is cloud computing ? Offering infrastructure, platform and software as a service over the internet to a global market. Move on-premises management of non functional IT assets to a providor. Difference from traditional hostings Sold on demand “pay as you grow” Elastic scalability Service is fully managed by the providor End user centric (IW or developer) Strong focus on integration (cloud-cloud or cloud-on-premises) Cloud = Deploying applications on a platform that evolves in technology

5 The Windows Azure platform is a flexible cloud–computing platform that lets you focus on solving business problems and addressing customer needs.

10 Capacity in a cloud model Actual Load Allocated IT capacities Reduction of initial investments Reduction of “over-supply“ No “under-supply“ Possible reduction of IT-capacities in case of reduced load IT CAPACITY Load Forecast TIME

14 Azure Compute SLA Windows Azure has separate SLA’s for compute and storage. For compute, we guarantee that when you deploy two or more role instances in different fault and upgrade domains your Internet facing roles will have external connectivity at least 99.95% of the time. Additionally, we will monitor all of your individual role instances and guarantee that 99.9% of the time we will detect when a role instance’s process is not running and initiate corrective action. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/sla

15 Usage Compute Time Average Inactivity Period On & off workloads (e.g. batch job) Over provisioned capacity is wasted Time to market can be cumbersome Compute Time Average Usage Unexpected/unplanned peak in demand Sudden spike impacts performance Can’t over provision for extreme cases Average Usage Compute Time Successful services needs to grow/scale Keeping up w/ growth is big IT challenge Complex lead time for deployment Compute Time Average Usage Services with micro seasonality trends Peaks due to periodic increased demand IT complexity and wasted capacity Scenarios
