Presented for 586 Dr. Obannon July 1, 2010 The following is a storyboard for a multimedia project concerning a day in the life of a Roman citizen. The pictures are included in their original form (as their names list) and in storyboard parts (part1, 2, 3,…). Both sets are included in the pictorial folder on Flickr. A Day in the Life of a Roman Citizen By Chabli Balcom The same piece of music is overlapped and used throughout the presentation. It was royalty free downloadable online. It is a Greek cithara playing a random ancient tune. Finally, all audio matches the captioning to enhance learning for both auditory and visual learners. Ideally this creator would create a Latin counterpart for older students.

You are a wealthy roman merchant. You awaken very early, perhaps before dawn. Your villa overlooks a beautiful courtyard. The first thing you do is dress for the day in a toga. Slaves or other servants have to aid you in wrapping it. The toga is circular, probably white, and 2.7 meters in diameter. A slave prepares jentaculum or breakfast for you as you prepare for the day. Your breakfast is simple, containing only bread or porridge, honey, and water. After breakfast, you decide to go to the Forum. You need to trade, bank, and shop. Most daily business is conducted in the Forum. Music begins. Romanvilla.jpgSlavewithmeal.jpg Toga.jpg Theforum.png

Upon arriving at the Forum, you wander around looking at the freshest foods from across the Empire. You meet some amicos, or friends, for a drink. Concurrently you decide to send word for your slaves to finish your shopping. On your way to the bank, you hear an orator speaking and go to listen. Many others have stopped and appear impressed with his persuasive ability. Before leaving the Forum, you go to the Temple of Vesta to offer a gift. You gave upon the sacred fire and are stirred with pride. You say a small prayer for the continued greatness of Rome. Insidetheromanmarket.jpgHangingout.jpg Oration.png Templevesta. png

While at the bath, you decide to order a quick lunch before going to watch the games. The larger Roman baths have shops and vendors, similar to a modern mall. It is now mid-day and feeling rather hot you decide to take a trip to the baths. It is always important to have your daily bath. You decide to have a cool bath, rather than a heated one. Due to the heat, you decide to return home for a quick nap. Most upper-class Romans will also be napping. Then, you decide to go enjoy yourself at the games. First, you visit the Colosseum to see if anything is going on. On any given day, at any time, there might be animal, gladiator, or naval battles arranged to entertain. 5 The Colosseum games are scheduled for later. You make your way onto the Palatine Hill to view the Campus Maximus, which is one of Rome’s finest horse racing tracks. You are in luck! The races are about to start. You make your way down the hill to get a good seat and make some bets. Bona Fortuna! This dinner party is the highlight of your day. You and friends discuss politics and literature over the food. Entrancetopalatine.pngChariotrace.jpg Circusmaximus.pngDinnerparty.png

To impress your guests you have arranged an elaborate dinner with many kinds of foods. The party lasts for a few hours and includes a short play. After your guests leave, you prepare for bed and work tomorrow.
