A private network that is used to securely share part of a business’s information or operations Information can be shared with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers, or other businesses Requires security and privacy(eg., firewall server management or the use of digital certificates) Can be accessed by anyone with the right clearance 4

Can add value to a company by allowing communication and co-operation with clients, customers, and partners Can save money by streamlining traditional functions and cutting overhead costs Provides other advantages to small businesses such as increased productivity and flexibility 5

Sales representatives can deliver interactive presentations regardless of a customer’s location Extranet systems allow contractor businesses to help keep everyone on track Manufacturing industry uses extranets to provide product specifications with ease Allows students to earn credits regardless of where they are or if they attend class regularly 6

Can be expensive to set up(e.g, costs of hardware, software, manpower and other associated costs) Can open systems up to breaches in system security due to outsiders having access to internal databases Threat of packet sniffers 7

Extranet systems were only able to share light documents in it’s early days 8
