2 Purpose of NBPTS  Promote the teaching profession & recognize accomplished teachers  Establish standards for what accomplished teachers should know & be able to do  Focus teachers’ attention on knowledge, performance, & professional judgment www.epsb.ky.gov 2

3 Eligibility Requirements of NBPTS  Baccalaureate Degree AND  Three years teaching experience with a valid state teaching license (certificate) OR  Three years teaching experience in schools recognized & approved by the state (if no license/certificate offered) www.epsb.ky.gov 3

4 Fees The assessment fee is $2,500, inclusive of a non- refundable fee of $500 and a non-refundable $65 processing charge due at the time of application. www.epsb.ky.gov 4

5 Kentucky’s Legislative Goal - KRS 161.131 “…by the year 2020 there will be at least one (1) national board certified teacher in every public school in Kentucky.” www.epsb.ky.gov 5

7 Temporary Suspension of Enrollments in the Kentucky Teachers’ National Incentive Trust Fund On January 3, 2012, the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) was requested to submit plans to adjust for a 7 – 9 % budget reduction for FY13 and FY14. In response to the need to reduce its budget accordingly, the EPSB approved the temporary suspension of all enrollments into the Teachers’ National Certification Incentive Trust Fund. Should funding become available, staff will enroll the number of candidates into the trust fund commensurate with the amount allocated. Please contact Robert Brown at the EPSB with further questions. 8 Contracts for mentoring services through the Candidate Support Providers will not be issued at this time. The priority use of the funds will be to enroll as many teachers as possible into the trust fund. The $200 teacher stipend per day for two (2) days has also been suspended for the current budget cycle. 9 Submit to EPSB the Statement of Intent. The completion of this form is MANDATORY and must be returned within 30 days of receiving confirmation that the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has approved the candidacy. 10 Choosing the Right Certificate Determine  the age range of students & subjects taught.  if the teaching experience is best represented by a generalist or a subject specific certificate.  readiness by reviewing the NB standards document for the selected certificate area. www.epsb.ky.gov 10

11 NBPTS Assessments Portfolio The portfolio is designed to capture teaching practice in real-time, real-life settings, thus allowing trained assessors to examine how the teacher translates knowledge and theory into practice. www.epsb.ky.gov 11

12 Portfolio Required to submit four (4) entries:  Three are classroom based, where video recordings and examples of student work serve as supporting documentation.  A fourth entry relates to your accomplishments outside of the classroom with families, the community or colleagues and how they impact student learning. www.epsb.ky.gov 12 NBPTS Assessments

13 Assessment Center The online assessment portion of the National Board Certification process asks the teacher to demonstrate content knowledge in response to six exercises developed and designed by practicing professionals in the candidate’s certificate area. www.epsb.ky.gov 13 NBPTS Assessments

14 Completing the Process  Submit portfolio to NBPTS prior to spring deadline date as established by NBPTS  Take assessment according to schedule as established by NBPTS  Submit to EPSB the 75% Reimbursement Form upon successful completion of the NPBTS process www.epsb.ky.gov 14
