22. Dyslexia is very common. It effects 1 in 10 people. You probably know someone with it. But it’s very misunderstood. Dyslexia

23. The word ‘Dyslexia’ is a Greek word…’difficulty with words’ it’s been around for hundreds of years! Some people think it’s just about reading, writing, numeracy but it can affect your life in many ways

24. Dyslexia does effect reading and spelling It can make letters swim or jump around Make people confuse similar looking letters like p/d It can make it difficult to remember common letter patterns in spelling

28. Rapid naming When trying to quickly name an object or person comes out with the wrong word. Takes longer to find the right word from memory Following instructions Working memory difficulties means can’t hold onto lots of instructions given at once Over 2-3 instructions and 4th or more falls of working memory “shelf”

Dyslexic people’s brains are wired differently meaning they approach things differently this can give different gifts such as: A different way of thinking can bring wonderful creative and artistic abilities Problem solving and entrepreneurial skills make dyslexic people very good business men Imagination and curiosity have helped many dyslexic people become inventors and scientists

30. Many people with dyslexia are extremely intelligent and have accomplished many great things.

31. Everybody learns in their own way and those with dyslexia are just the same. Students with dyslexia process information differently from others and they often like to learn things using a multi-sensory approach. So what is multi-sensory learning? Dyslexic Learners in School

32. Some of us prefer to learn by seeing. We think in pictures and may create pictures in our heads to help us learn.

33. Some of us may prefer to learn by hearing. We like listening to teachers and discussions. We talk things through to help us learn.

34. Some of us may prefer to learn through doing. We like acting out our learning, role play and making things. We like to find out about things by handling and touching them. Kinaesthetic (movement/doing it)

35. These different ways of learning can help all learners not just dyslexic students. So how do you learn best?
