1 Grammar Lesson: Capitalization By: Gerald Dooley, Aymee Varela

2 People  Always capitalize the names of people  When referring to occupation, do not capitalize  Capitalize titles, like doctor, professor, and judge, when they represent a specific person  Capitalize family relationships only when they are used as part of a person’s title  Capitalize the names of political, racial, social, national, civic, and athletic groups

3 People Examples  Mrs. Ayik is the greatest teacher ever at UC Merced.  The tallest man in the world is Johnzo Handzi.  Olympic Medalist, Usain Bolt, holds many world records.  My Aunt, Laura, works for the US forest service.

4 Places  Always capitalize the names of specific places: cities, countries, geographic regions, street names, schools and universities, and landmarks  Capitalize words that are rooted from the names of places, including languages  Do not capitalize directions or other general geographical words

5 Places Examples  The UC Merced Campus is always packed with people pursuing classes.  Yosemite National Forest has the best view in the western region.  Drive north until you reach the city of Modesto, then head west to Livermore.

6 Dates and Events  Always capitalize names of months, days of the week, and holidays  Capitalize the names of historic events  Do not capitalize the names of seasons, unless the season is part of a title

7 Dates and Events Examples  The best time of year is winter, because Christmas brings families together.  I really enjoy having Writing 1 classes on Monday and Wednesday.  I enjoy March Madness, because I love basketball.

8 Title of Works  Always capitalize the titles of articles, books, magazines, songs, albums, television shows, plays, etc.  Don’t capitalize short prepositions or articles (the, an, of, etc.) if they aren’t the first word of the title  Capitalize the brand names of specific products  Do not capitalize the general names of products

9 Title of Works Examples  Keys for Writers aids many students with their ability to write.  Mrs. Ayik wants our class to read “The Space Between Us,” to learn about freedom in India.  “Change of Heart” by Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite books.
