Unit 3: Solving Equations Minds On

Unit 3: Solving Equations Solving Polynomial Equations Success Criteria for Solving Polynomial Equations:  Isolate the variable  Collect like terms  Follow SAMDEB to undo operations  Do the inverse operation (do the opposite)  Keep the equation balanced (whatever you do to one side you must also do to the other)  Use the distributive property  The numerator is always in brackets  Only ONE equal sign per line  Perform all 4 operations with integers correctly  Get like terms on the same side of the equal sign and remember to change signs when moving from one side of the equal sign to the other  Perform a check

Unit 3: Solving Equations Introduction to Word Problems Learning Goals: I can create equations from word problems I can solve equations that represent real life problems

Success Criteria Read the problem. Underline what it is asking you to find out Assign a variable (x) to the quantity you are trying to find out. (let X equal…..) Write an equation to represent the relationship between the quantities given in the problem Answer the question Check the answer Unit 3: Solving Equations Introduction to Word Problems

SymbolCommonly Used Words +Add, sum, plus, increase, more - Subtract, difference, minus, decreases, less XMultiply, product, of, times Division, quotient, over, out of, divide, split into parts, ratios =Is, equals, results in therefore Unit 3: Solving Equations Introduction to Word Problems

Example 1 When 4 is added to five times a number, the result is 79. Find the number Success Criteria Read the problem. Underline what it is asking you to find out Assign a variable (x) to the quantity you are trying to find out. (let X equal…..) Write an equation to represent the relationship between the quantities given in the problem Answer the question Check the answer. Unit 3: Solving Equations Introduction to Word Problems

Example 2 The sum of a number and 9 is multiplied by -2 and the answer is -8.

Example 3 There are 3 sisters, Dina, Michelle and Juliette. Dina is half as old as Michelle and 3 years younger than Juliette. Write an expression to describe this situation. Success Criteria Read the problem. Underline what it is asking you to find out Assign a variable (x) to the quantity you are trying to find out. (let X equal…..)
