3 What is Magnetism? Magnetism is a force that causes attraction or repulsion between objects. Magnets always contain metal. The atoms in a magnetic material, like iron or steel, all point in the same direction. Magnetic force can travel through many materials, even water.

4 What is Magnetism? Magnets attract only certain types of materials which are: steel, iron, cobalt, and nickel. Every magnet has two poles. The poles are the points where the magnetic force is strongest. One pole is called the north pole. The other is the south pole.

5 What is Magnetism? The area around a magnet is called the magnetic field. Magnetic fields are invisible. A magnetic field is created by the magnetism of a permanent magnet, or electromagnet.

6 Types of Magnets There are different types of magnets. Permanent
Temporary Electromagnets Magnets come in different shapes and sizes.

7 Types of Magnets Electro-magnets are temporary magnets that are formed when electricity flows through a coiled wire. Electromagnets come in all shapes and sizes.

Magnets are used in many everyday items: Telephones Computers and disks Refrigerators Maglev Trains Compasses
