2 The History of Meningiomas  This tumor was first established in 1730.  First triumphant in1878 and repeated in 1904.  1938 the book “Meningiomas”  The book reviewed 313 cases  Categorized as Benign, Atypical, Malignant, or Anaplastic

3 Causes of Meningiomas  Not clear on what exactly causes Meningiomas  Radiation (people who undergo radiation to the brain) to the brain)  Cell Mutates/Alter In the meninges

4 Symptoms of Meningiomas  Seizures  Visual changes  Hearing loss  Changes in thinking  Arm and/or leg weakness  Headaches  Nausea  Vomiting

5 Benign Meningiomas  Usually Harmless  Not cancerous

6 Atypical Meningiomas  Grow more rapidly than benign  Have a higher chance of growing back

7 Malignant or Anaplastic Meningiomas  Form of CANCER!!  Also more likely to grow back

8 Surgery!!  Starting surgery, the skull is cut open.  During the doctors cautiously remove the tumor.  After the wound is then stapled\stitched closed as shown.

9 Surgery Complications!!  Accumulation of fluid  20% develop seizures after surgery  neurologic problems (muscle weakness, speech problems, or difficulty with coordination)  increased risk of blood clots

10 Radiation Treatment  Radiation Therapy  High energy x-rays to damage tumor cells  Usually after surgery recovery

11 Side Effects of Radiation Therapy  May damage nearby Brain Tissue  Cant stop all tumor cells from growing  Hair loss  Mild Fatigue  Mild skin redness or irritation
