Who was he?  Leonardo Da Vinci was born 15 April, 1452.  He was born in Vinci, a little village near Florence, Italy.  Leonardo is known as a famous painter and artist, but he was also one of the world’s best inventors and engineers.  His parents were called Piero Fruosino De Antonio Da Vinci and Caterina Da Vinci.  There weren’t many books back then, so he learnt from studying nature!

Renaissance man  The Renaissance began in Florence, in the 1400s.  Greek scholars moved to Italy (from Constantinople)after the Ottoman Turks invaded.  Renaissance means ‘re-birth’  It was a new age of learning, discovery and explorations.  Renaissance men were interested in science, medicine, the arts and technology.

4. What he invented  The bicycle  Aeroplane  Helicopter  Parachute  Tank  500 years ahead of anybody else….!  (But sadly, none of them were built while he was alive. His notebooks and diagrams were found after he died.)

10. Siblings  Leonardo had 17 brothers and sisters altogether!!!!!! And you think 1 or 2 are bad!  There were 2 sisters and about 15 brothers!!!! What a lot of brothers!  They were all half-siblings – they had the same father, but a different mother
