2 Homo- same Graph- writing Homographs – two words that are spelled the same way but have different meanings.

3 Different from: ◦Homophones (“same sound”)  Sound the same/different spelling and meaning ◦ Aisle/Isle ◦ Bear/Bare ◦ There/Their

4 Homonyms (“same name”) ◦Sound the same/spelled the same/different meaning  Fair  Wave  Well

5 Use these words in a sentence: ◦Tear ◦Wind ◦Close Different meanings, different pronunciation.

6 Stress Homographs You need to read the sentence to know how to pronounce most homographs. Ex: ◦The convict escaped from his jail cell. ◦The prosecutor is hoping to convict the suspected robber.

7 Challenge 1: Stress homograph practice sheet

8 Challenge 2: Illustrate a cartoon strip or riddle that gets its humor from a homograph

9 Challenge 3: Let’s brainstorm a list of 10 pairs of homophones and 20 true homonyms. MARK ANY WORDS YOU DON’T KNOW THE MEANING OF. With your table partner, write a poem, or short (very short) story that uses 10 pairs of these words. ◦If you use “bare,” then you also have to use “bear.” ◦Highlight each of the words
