Micro Sustainable Design Eco Friendly Products Vilnius 2012 KEA Denmark – Stine, Maria, Sintija & Kasper Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Sustainability  What is Sustainability?  Definition of Sustainable Development: ”Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” - Brundtland Commision 1987 Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Why Sustainability  Population: ”Day of 7 Billion” was declared by UN Population Division to be the 31st of October 2011  Ressources: Renewable - Nonrenewable Aral Sea 1989 -2008 Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

∗ 1950's, used everyday ∗ Most are not biodegradable ∗ Disposal is a problem ∗ The Pacific Plastic Continent: floating island of plastic twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean Plastic ∗ Landfills ∗ Damage the environment ∗ The Sustainable solution: Plastic Recycling ∗ Only a few percentage of the plastics worldwide are recycled, because it is a complex process HDPE PVC Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Basics of Plastic Recyling The Plastic Recycling Circle  Sorting the plastic  Machine that shredders the plastic into tiny flakes  The flakes are then washed, dried and melted.  The melted plastic is extruded into pellets which are sold to end markets or manufacturers who then develop it into various plastic products Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Why Recycle? Applications  Spun into fine threath-like material (carpets, fabrics like fleece)  Pellets are melted and thermoformed into plastic containers (garden products and packaching) Environmental Advantages  Leads to oil conservation  Decrease Discharge of Greenhouse Gas: number of steps involved in recycling of plastic is fewer, it consumes less energy and creates less pollution.  It needs less energy  Water usage in manufacturing original plastic is 90% more compare the water used in the process of recycle plastic.  Landfills can be recovered Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Product Life Circle Approaches Cradle to Grave Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Cradle to Grave  Life cycle analysis, which is the evaluation of the environmental impacts of a given product to when it becomes waste  Take-make-waste- model on which the industrial revolution is built  All this waste pollutes the air, water and soil, and valuable or recyclable materials are lost to incineration or landfill Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Cradle to Cradle Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

 German chemist Michael Braungart and American architect William McDonough- Revolutionists in cradle to cradle concept and two men that are trying to find a way how to ‘remake the way we make things’  Braungart and McDonough together founded ‘Design Chemistry’- a firm that works with business and governments to find C2C solutions to their problems Cradle to Cradle - The Philosophy Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Cradle to Cradle - The Philosophy  All things manufactured should from beginning be designed with intention that they will eventually be recycled, either back to the soil, harmlessly, or into some other product  WASTE=FOOD Not necessarily the kind you eat, but the kind that feeds something useful Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

 A method that is much more environmentally friendly  The aim of C2C is to design production techniques that are not just efficient but are essentially waste free  Recycling, reusing, composting- tools that can be used in Cradle to Cradle framework Cradle to Cradle - The Method Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

∗ A beer bottle (in countries where it can be turned in for reuse/recycling)- it is made to be reused ∗ Herman Miller Aeron chair- almost two-thirds of each chair is recycled materials, and 94% of the entire chair is recyclable. It also adapts to virtually every body A Cradle to Cradle Example Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Examples of Recycling Products Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580

Our Blog www.summerschool.keablogs.dk ∗ Blog atmosphere ∗ Useful links ∗ You’re welcome to debate and discuss on the site ∗ Rhetorical situation: ethos, pathos, logic. Grant Agreement Reference Number: LLP-ERA-IP-2011-LT-0580
