U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey U.S. National Water Census “Cyber – Platform” Update Progress and challenges to overcome in realizing a high resolution, consistent water budget for the U.S. David L Blodgett, U.S. Geological Survey

Scope · Support a national web portal for information about water availability, quality, and ecological integrity. – High Res Water Budget · Support a platform for nationally consistent multi-scale hydrologic and related modeling support. · Modeling-Decision Support Lifecycle

Modeling-decision support lifecycle 1. Models built using enterprise data and services. 2. Calibrated model parameters and output contributed back to community portal. 3. Model input and output tracked and available to decision support via common standards.

National Water Census portal proposed architecture

Primary Interface Standards NameAbbrev.Purpose Catalog Service for the Web using ISO Encoded Metadata CSW/ISO Discovery metadata and data service information Web Map Service WMS Provides screen resolution visualizations of geographic data. Web Coverage Service WCS Provides arbitrary resolution gridded* data Opensource Project for a Network Data Access Protocol OPeNDAP Provides access to any explicitly indexed data esp. multidimensional data. Web Feature Service WFS Allows query of and access to entities - (their geometry and attributes) Sensor Observation Service SOS Provides query mechanisms unique to the needs of time-series data access Web Processing Service WPS Provides a mechanism to describe and execute processing algorithms via a web based API

Developed Components: · Brokered “uploader” for THREDDS-based SOS · Scientist - written (R) statistics run as generalized WPS algorithm to generate Hydro/Ecoflow statistics. · CSW-Transactions to track artifacts and versions.

Service Integrations to Note: · ISO 19115/119-CSW Metadata Drives App. · Feature time series – WMS/WFS and SOS. · WPS outputs SOS or other web service. · WPS “data-broker” consumes SOS to calculate Hydro/Eco statistics.

Primary Challenges: · How to utilize NHD+ (Lower Res, Clean, w/ catchments) and NHD High Res (Most updated, only streams) in the same system. · How to tie well water withdrawals to hydrography for water use evaluation. · Relating observation and model result services to their feature representations.
