AKA: Native Sign Language separate from Eng. capable of great subtlety in a visual mode Uses different syntax than Eng. Cannot be used simultaneously w/ voiced Eng. Many signs = more conceptual than those in Eng. Used by d/Deaf adults, hearing children of d/Deaf adults and d/Deaf children

4 Partial Signed English (PSE)
AKA: Pidgin Sign, Sign(ed) English Combination ASL & ME Signed in Eng. word order Endings in grammatical markers are often not used Can be used simultaneously w/ voiced Eng. Borrows many ASL signs Occasional FS Used by d/Deaf people & hearing people in social & formal situations Often said to bridge gap Widely used by interpreters

5 Signed Exact English (SEE 2)
AKA: Manual Eng. (ME) or (Manually Coded Eng. (MCE), Seeing Essential Eng. (SEE 1), Local Sign Systems Visual code for Eng. Language Assist deaf children in learning Eng. Follows Eng. Exactly Same word order, grammatical markers Can be used simultaneously w/ voiced Eng. Borrows many ASL signs Includes invented signs for grammar & vocab Uses occasional FS Widely used in public schools Used by deaf children in formal situations Rarely used by d/Deaf adults or in social situations
